9 best drone books to read on sept 6 national read a book day for drone enthusiasts

National Read a Book Day is observed annually on September 6. In honor of the holiday, we compiled a list of the best drone books for every type of drone enthusiast.

Whether you are looking for drone-related fiction, training to become a certified pilot or something in between, we have got you covered for the best drone-related books. Grab one, or why not indulge in two, and prepare yourself for National Read a Book Day with this guide to the best drone books.

1. Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK)

The Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, the official FAA handbook,  provides basic knowledge for all pilots. The handbook is useful for beginning pilots, as well as those pursuing more advanced pilot certificates (like the Part 107 test).  Keep in mind that you’ll likely need more than this handbook to help you prepare for the Part 107 test.  Also, there are a number of excellent Part 107 online study courses that can augment the reading of this book.

Purchase Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge on Amazon for $44.99

2. The Photographer’s Guide to Drones (2nd Edition) by Colin Smith

Award-winning photographer Colin Smith guides you towards mastering your drone and creating powerful and impact imagery in The Photographer’s Guide to Drones (2nd Edition). Colin Smith is something of a legend in the drone community. And in his very own book, he will teach you how to fly a drone, new rules of composition for aerial photography, how to create the best files for still photos and video, post-processing techniques, and more.

Purchase The Photographer’s Guide to Drones, 2nd Edition on Amazon for $35.49

3. The Complete Guide to Drones (Extended 2nd Edition) by Adam Juniper

Consider this next pick as a sort of visual encyclopedia for drones. “The Complete Guide to Drones” explains how drones are developed, where they’re going, and which one you should choose. This book covers everything from flying indoors or outside to buying or building drones. It even includes complete instructions to build both a simple drone and a super-fast RPV racer yourself.

Adam Junpier also wrote a drone handbook for kids, The Drone Pilot’s Handbook: The Knowledge, the Skills, the Rules. Purchase on Amazon for $13.00.

4. Eyes over the World: The Most Spectacular Drone Photography by Dirk Dallas

If you’re looking for a statement piece in your living room, this is absolutely it. Dirk Dallas, most notable in the drone industry for running the Instagram account “From Where I Drone” published a stunning hardcover drone coffee table book containing loads of aerial images. The book features a collection of about 200 aerial images taken across all seven continents.

So, set it out on your coffee table, and your guests will certainly thumb through it — even if they aren’t actually drone people themselves.

5. The Drone Age: How Drone Technology Will Change War and Peace by Michael J. Boyle

This drone book is for the cerebral set and is certainly not light reading.

In “The Drone Age,” Michael J. Boyle discusses how drones impact international relations, security, and surveillance, providing a thought-provoking examination of the future implications of drone technology. Boyle shows how drone technology could become central to the ways that governments compete for power and influence in the future.

6. Above the World: Earth Through A Drone’s Eye by teNeues

Then again, if the above is too much intense reading for you, consider this one. That’s because if you are less into reading and more into, erh, looking, then perhaps try “Above the World.” The book showcases some of the world’s best aerial photography, including well-known aerial photographers and images captured by non-professionals.

Purchase Above the World: Earth Through A Drone’s Eyes on Amazon for $43.50

7. Zero Day by Mark Russinovich

If fiction is more your speed, try checking out “Zero Day” by Mark Russinovich, a cyber-thriller that touches on drone technology and its potential vulnerabilities. The story follows a cybersecurity expert as he investigates a series of cyberattacks that threaten national security. We picked this one simply because drones play a significant role in the plot.

Purchase Zero Day by Mark Russinovich on Amazon for $5.17

8. T-Bone the Drone by Shanda McCloskey

If you’re shopping for a younger drone enthusiast, there are plenty of wonderful drone children’s books to choose from, and T-Bone the Drone is no exception. The book follows Lucas and his new friend T-bone the Drone as they come home from the store —e help save the day. The book is best suited for children ages 4 to 8 years old (though check out my guide to the best drone children’s books for more picks that span kids of even broader age ranges).

Purchase T-Bone the Drone on Amazon for $12.58

9. Ultimate UAS / Drone Pilot Logbook: Safety Checklist, Flight Logbook, Repair Logbook, & Maintenance Logbook by Ty Justice

We may be slightly cheating here on the last selection. But, this logbook is perfect for any certified drone pilot, so we couldn’t leave it off the list. Logging your flights is an essential part of being a responsible drone pilot.

While many folks might use digital drone logbooks, it can sometimes be preferred to use a paper logbook like this one. The benefits of paper over digital include no logins to deal with, no batteries to charge, no worries about your data being stolen, and no worries about having a Wi-Fi or data connection.

This particular logbook is nice because it includes flight safety checklists, flight logs, repair logs, and maintenance logs.

Purchase the Ultimate UAS/ Drone Pilot Logbook on Amazon for $12.49
