DJI teases possible Mini 3 product launch — and product tester program

DJI is set to launch a new product tomorrow — and many speculate that it’ll be a Mini 3 drone. But DJI also put another twist in the plot by using the same release to announce a new “SkyPixel Product Tryout” program.

The first big piece of news coming out of DJI is that it’ll launch something new tomorrow. The launch event will be held on May 10, 2022 at 9 a.m. ET. Official details are scant, but DJI is calling the event “A Twist in the Plot.” The teaser accompanying the event shows a series of rotating glass lenses set behind bubbles or drops of water.

Most of the drone forums and social media posts suggest that the new product will be a DJI Mini 3. Some leaked product images, as well as a possible specs list, are floating elsewhere on the internet. DJI released its Mini 2 drone in November 2020. Meanwhile, DJI’s latest drone launch, the DJI Mavic 3, came out a year later in November 2021.

The DJI Mini 2 is an ultra-light (249 grams, to be exact), portable drone that’s capable of recording 4K video — particularly impressive given the drone’s small size and low price point. The DJI Mavic 3 is a far heftier (and more expensive drone) with a dual-camera system featuring Hasselblad. It’s got an incredible 46-minute battery life, and offers improved sense and avoid tech that makes this drone nearly crashproof.

Become a DJI product tester

But what’s posted below the teaser image for the new product launch is really drawing attention among DJI enthusiasts. DJI’s teaser notice includes a link to a SkyPixel Product Tryout, which suggests that you can “become a product tester to try out the latest DJI product before anyone else.”

Between now and May 18, you’ll be able to apply to DJI’s SkyPixel Product Tryout program by filling out and submitting an application form. DJI’s SkyPixel committee will review all applications by May 24, and contact those accepted between May 25 and 30 via email.

If accepted, testers will get to try out the new product for 28 days. In exchange, DJI mandates that testers provide either a product review, unboxing or shot-on video, as well as a product tryout report with both texts and images, which they’ll have to post to SkyPixel, the DJI forum and at least one major social media platform like Youtube, Instagram or TikTok. They also may have to participate in user interviews. After those 28 days, testers will have to send it back.

Use this link to apply for the DJI product tester program (you’ll have to have a free SkyPixel account).

Stay tuned to The Drone Girl, as we’ll be all over the next product drop set for tomorrow (Tuesday, May 10). What do you think DJI will release? A Mini 3, or something else? Leave your comments below!
