Last month, we showed you the best drone photo of 2023 (and the 10 runners up). But what about the best drone video of 2023?

SkyPixel has named the winners of its 8th Annual Photo & Video Contest. The photos were stunning, but the videos are transfixing. Among the 65,000 submissions into this year’s contest, this year’s judging panel narrowed the video submissions to one grand prize winner.

That’s “Why I Travel the World Alone” by Bashir Abu Shakra. It’s an autobiographical short film that mixes sweeping mountaintop landscapes with the artist’s childhood family recordings in a project that Shakra said took four years to make.

Watch it on the SkyPixel website here.

“In such big projects, patience is the key,” Shakra said. “I kept my best shots unpublished for years waiting for the whole project to be completed. I even had to take semesters off in college just to be able to travel and complete this project, but that’s how much I believed in it.”

But because it’s impossible to narrow the thousands of entries down to just one, SkyPixel also named 10 Video winners. Below are their title cards. Click the image below or this link to watch them on the SkyPixel website:

And that’s not all. There are more awards for People’s Choice Categories and other Nominated Winners, which you can see here.

About the SkyPixel 8th Annual Photo & Video Contest

SkyPixel is an online aerial art community affiliated with DJI that runs an annual aerial art contest. Submissions must always be primarily filmed on a drone, though it doesn’t actually have to be a DJI drone.

Of course, prizes are DJI (or DJI-adjacent). The grand prize winner of the SkyPixel 8th Annual Photo & Video Contest, Shakra, walked away with the Hasselblad 907X Anniversary Edition Medium Format Camera Kit, which can sometimes retail at $15,100. The 10 other winners received a DJI Mavic 3 Fly More Combo including the upgraded DJI RC Pro, which is a higher-performance remote controller with an ultra-bright 1080p screen and 15 km transmission range.

To be eligible to win the title of best drone video of 2023, artists had to upload their work to SkyPixel in a submission period that opened in November 2022 and ran through January 30, 2023. Submissions were evaluated by a judging panel that included Phil Pastuhov, most famous for his work as Director of Cinematography for The Lord of the Rings; Academy Award-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda; and National Geographic’s Anne Farrar.
